Power is always connected to purpose! Why do we need power? Why do we need Christ dwelling in us? Why do we need to be rooted and grounded in love? Why do we need to be filled with all the fullness of God? So our purpose doesn’t get in the way of God’s purpose!
So, instead of living self-centered, or “self-conscious,” we live “soul-conscious!” As God transforms us, He gives us an awareness of others, not just of how they behave, but what they believe and what they are living for. It’s an awareness and concern of their eternal destiny! The power of God produces that in us!
It is important that we understand what God’s purpose is:
Look at II Timothy 1:8-9: Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began… (NKJ)
God’s Eternal Purpose thru Christ:
1. To Seek and to Save that which was Lost
“Today, salvation has come to this house…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)
The purpose of Christ is to restore lost intimacy between God and man. To rescue man from “Lostness,” (man’s aloneness without God, without hope, whose destiny is HELL. God is reconciling the lost relationship with mankind. God is reconciling the lost relationship with you.
2. To Build His Kingdom – with Christ as KING (Matthew 3)
What is the Kingdom of God? The definition of the Kingdom of God is: “The presence and spiritual reign and authority of Christ the King on this earth.” God’s plan was always to establish a Kingdom over which He would be King (to dwell with his people in peace and love and joy). The Old Testament makes very clear that in one sense God is now the king over all things and his kingdom is established.
Exodus 19:5-6: if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. 6 `And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” (NKJ)
Matthew 6:33: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
3. To Gather his family, Form His Body, Build His Temple (Eph. 3:13)
Ephesians 2:16, 19-22: that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (NKJ)
4. Hope for the World
His purpose for the church is – Extend Hope to the World!
II Corinthians 5:18-21: Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NKJ)
We are the hope! WE WERE MADE FOR A MISSION! But it seems so impossible. And it is, in our own strength and power!
Father, make me soul-conscious. Give me the strength and power I need to be less conscious of myself and more conscious of the eternal souls around me. Teach me to reach them with your love and I will trust you to do the “impossible!”
