Title: Put Blinders On
Text: Matthew 7:13-14
By Heather Lambert
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Mat 7:13-14 ESV)
We were walking into the mall on a quick mission to get a pair of black shoes. My family had not so enthusiastically agreed to join me on the hunt. As we were walking through the mall and I was looking at cute purses, new fashions, discounted jewelry, and smelling just a few new perfumes, I heard my 11 year old son murmur to his dad. “Don’t you wish we could put blinders on her?” It was quite an amusing moment as I realized I had been quickly and easily distracted by many enticing objects. My sons remedy to get me to focus on what would be the most beneficial for our shopping trip was to help create a clear tunnel of vision focused only on the shoe department.
Our lives can get so busy. We can become so easily distracted. So many things vie for our attention and focus. Fasting is a time set aside to put blinders on and to focus specifically on our beautiful Lord. The Bible explains the focus required in Matthew 7:13-14 telling us the way to life is through a narrow gate that is found only by a few. Fasting is a time set aside to pray and want the salvation of souls and the work of God more than we want food, the next meal, the next bit of comfort.
